If you don’t like using bleach but like the results, try this DIY version! Hydrogen peroxide and lemon brighten your whites without the chlorine smell, and it takes about five minutes to mix up a full jug.
Storage tip: Use a dark jug and keep it out of the sun. Peroxide breaks down in light, so a clear bottle loses its power fast.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon citric acid (optional)
- 20 drops dōTERRA Lemon essential oil
- Distilled water
- A 2 L dark-coloured jug
How to make it
- Pour the peroxide, lemon juice, citric acid (if using) and Lemon oil into the dark jug.
- Swish it around until the citric acid dissolves.
- Fill the rest of the jug with distilled water.
- Label the jug, then shake before each use and add it to your wash as you would bleach.
Safety tips
- Never mix with other cleaners. Don’t combine this with chlorine bleach or vinegar; mixing peroxide with other cleaners can create harmful fumes.
- Brightener, not disinfectant. It won’t sanitize the way chlorine bleach does.
- Test a hidden spot first. Peroxide can lighten some coloured fabrics.
- Store it safely. Keep the jug in a cool, dark place, clearly labelled, and away from children and pets.
