How this library approaches wellness

Essential oils can be part of an enjoyable sensory routine, but they are not a cure-all. Information here is intended for general education and personal reference—not diagnosis, treatment or a replacement for qualified medical advice. Research and safety guidance vary by oil, route of use and individual circumstances.

Practical, not preachy

Clear instructions, realistic expectations and helpful context—without promising that an oil can fix everything.

Evidence-aware

Traditional use, personal experience and scientific evidence are different kinds of information. Guides should make those distinctions clear.

Essential-oil safety, first

Concentrated oils deserve care. Safety depends on the specific oil, concentration, route of exposure, age, health circumstances and other people or animals in the home.

  • For skin: don’t assume an oil is safe to apply neat. Use an appropriate dilution for the specific oil and intended use, and stop if irritation occurs.
  • For ingestion: don’t swallow essential oils or add them to food or drinks unless specifically directed by a qualified clinician with relevant expertise.
  • For diffusion: keep sessions conservative, maintain ventilation and stop if anyone develops irritation, coughing, headache or breathing discomfort.
  • For children, pregnancy, health conditions or medications: check reliable, oil-specific guidance and consult a qualified health professional when appropriate.
  • For pets: animals can be sensitive to essential oils. Cats are especially important to consider: keep oils and diffusers inaccessible, provide a way to leave the room, and don’t diffuse around cats without veterinary guidance. Never apply oils to a pet unless a veterinarian specifically directs it.
  • For storage: keep bottles closed, labelled and out of reach of children and pets. Follow the product label and seek poison-control or veterinary advice promptly after a suspected exposure.
