DIY Deodorant Spray

I have been looking for a DIY deodorant recipe that works.

My first was baking soda, water and essential oils. It was OK, but I had to reapply a couple of times throughout the day.

Next, I tried apple cider vinegar. Do not do this — I literally poured it down the drain. This pained me as I don’t like to waste my oils.

I kept searching until I found another recipe that called for magnesium oil. Magnesium oil isn’t really an oil; it’s magnesium diluted in water. The original article described magnesium products as a natural odour blocker.

Original homemade deodorant spray bottle

Original formula

In a glass spray bottle, add:

  • 2 oz magnesium oil
  • 5 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 3 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 2 drops geranium essential oil
  • 2 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 2 drops grapefruit essential oil

The original author chose clary sage for its scent, geranium for odour control, frankincense for skin, grapefruit to balance the other scents, and ylang ylang because it was a favourite.

The original article linked to Dr. Axe’s article on magnesium oil.

Safety & responsible use

  • The original author noted that magnesium chloride spray can sting or irritate freshly shaved skin. Do not apply to broken or irritated skin; stop if it burns or causes a rash.
  • Essential oils do not dissolve evenly in water-based magnesium spray. This is a historical formula, not a tested or professionally formulated product, and the drops may contact skin in concentrated form.
  • Grapefruit and other citrus oils vary by type and may have additional sun-sensitivity considerations. Check the exact oil’s current safety guidance before skin use.
  • Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use on children or pets without appropriate professional guidance. Essential oils can be hazardous to cats; keep the bottle and spills out of their reach.
  • This is not an evidence-based treatment for a medical condition, and results may vary.
