Trying to find ways to use your oils without just diffusing them can be fun! Be creative!
We simply used rock salt and essential oils, plus a vase and silk flowers from the dollar store and voilà! An inexpensive pretty air freshener.
What You’ll Need
- Salt crystals: Rock salt, or other similarly coarse salts.
- Essential oils: The original post suggests about 75 drops for this project. That is a high amount for a small decorative container, so use caution and consider using substantially less.
- Glass vase or decorative container: Choose a stable container that won’t tip easily.
Instructions from the Original Archive
- In a small glass bottle or vial, mix the essential oil or blend with 1.5–2 cups of salt until distributed evenly over the salt crystals.
- Optionally, add a few drops of coloring and mix thoroughly.
- Pour the salt crystals into your decorative glass container.
- Place the container in your desired area. Periodically stirring or shaking the container may renew the aroma.

Safety Notes
- Keep the container out of reach of children and pets, and where it cannot be knocked over or spilled.
- Do not place it near food, flames, heat sources, or where pets are confined and unable to leave.
- Essential oils can irritate skin and airways and may be harmful to pets. Stop using it if anyone experiences irritation or breathing symptoms.
- The original archive’s suggestion of 75 drops has not been independently validated; this amount should not be treated as a safety-tested recommendation.
